His interest in motor racing developed as a young boy whilst watching Grand Prix Racing in the UK, and whilst serving in the Royal Air Force he took this one step further and started competing in Kart racing. He became a regular competitor in both National and Royal Air Force competitions and won four Championships during his racing career, as well as racing at international level for the Welsh national squad.

Along side this he was also Chief Mechanic for Cardiff Motor Sports Centre working on the schools fleet of Formula Renault 1700 single seat race cars and Formula XR3i´s

A sizeable accident in the 1998 Inter-nations race all but finished his racing career and it was at this time that Fred decided to give back to the sport and underwent 3 years training to qualify as a UK licensed MSA Clerk of The Course (Race Director) and also took on the task as Deputy Team Manager and Judicial representative for the Welsh National Kart Team.
